Protests Erupt in Geneva Streets
Around 20,000 demonstrators gathered in Geneva for a march targeting the upcoming G7 summit across the border in France. The event began peacefully but escalated when some participants turned their attention to symbols of capitalism and multilateral institutions.
A parked Tesla vehicle was set on fire and windows were smashed at a United Nations agency office. Witnesses reported that bricks were thrown at police officers as tensions rose in the city center.
Police Response and Public Concerns
Authorities deployed tear gas to disperse the crowds after objects were hurled at officers. Local businesses boarded up their premises in advance due to fears of further violence, while hundreds of riot police maintained a presence throughout the area.
The G7 gathering, set to run from Monday to Wednesday in Évian-les-Bains, will bring together leaders from France, Britain, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States, and the European Union. Discussions are expected to focus on conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.
To me, it's a meeting of the rich that shows once again how the rich can become even richer while the poor are left behind.
Demonstrators Voice Their Grievances
Participants described the G7 as a concentration of political and economic power that they oppose. Previous summits have also drawn protests over issues including globalization, climate change, and economic inequality.
One demonstrator highlighted gender inequality as a core concern, stating that the values represented by the G7 are completely misogynistic and contribute to ongoing disparities. Another noted that the heavy police presence appeared designed to discourage participation.
This is an attempt to frighten demonstrators, to frighten people and discourage them from coming out to protest.
